Jekyll Island's Historic District!
In
1886, a group of millionaires purchased Jekyll Island and converted it into
a beautiful place for the country's most exclusive club. By 1900, the club's
roster represented one-sixth of the world's wealth. Names like Astor,
Vanderbilt, Morgan, Pulitzer, Gould, Rockefeller and Macy, as well as many
others filled the select club's register. Non-members, regardless of
stature, were not allowed.
Throughout
World War II the millionaires were asked to avoid the potential risk of
enemy attacks by staying away from the island. In 1947, the State of Georgia
purchased Jekyll Island and it has since become an attraction to history
buffs as well as vacationers. Travelers visiting the island will immediately
begin to feel the surrounding history of the famous elite who had previously
inhabited this glamorous setting. Restored and preserved buildings are
comfortably nestled among newer establishments.
Jekyll
Island is managed under an act of the State Legislature by the Jekyll Island
State Park Authority. It is expected to operate as a self-sustaining entity
of the state government. By this same act, the Authority must retain
approximately 66% of the island lands in their undeveloped, natural state.
On
of the most unique features of Jekyll Island is the fact that from purchase
through the mid-1970's the Jekyll Island Authority granted residential
leases for private development. Seen as a way to permit private development
for the hotels and support businesses, approximately 640 private residences
are located on the island. Many residents live on the island year round.
Jekyll Realty has had the honor
of being the oldest realty and rental/property management company on Jekyll
Island. We take pleasure in managing the rental of private homes, furnished
and decorated by their individual owners, to the many guests who choose this
comfortable setting for their vacations and meeting sites.
